Addressing food insecurity for better adherence

Started by Joia Mukherjee, MD, MPH on 17 Jul 2008

In the last five years, increased attention and resources have been focused on pandemic diseases, particularly the chronic, wasting, infectious diseases AIDS and tuberculosis, which draw into sharp relief the linkages between health, nutrition, and food security. The chronic and pervasive food insecurity that underlies poor health in many settings requires a different, long-term, and integrated approach, and render efforts in improving adherence to regimens very difficult.

This new nutrition section on PIH Model Online provides the philosophical underpinnings, strategies and methods we use to plan and design PIH's food and nutrition programs.

Topics covered include: food assistance to HIV and TB patients; infant feeding in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV; pediatric malnutrition; school lunches; and agricultural initiatives.

Examples of how we implement these programs come mainly from Zanmi Lasante in Haiti and Inshuti Mu Buzima in Rwanda.
