Training sessions for CHWs:
During our training sessions for CHWs, we have found that a number of program issues arose, and we think it is important for these issues to be fed back to the program team. We would like to hear about any experiences other may have of developing and ensuring a formal process between the CHW training and clinical and non-clinical programs.
- How have you captured this interaction in your planning process?
- Taking a wider perspective, do you carry out any training on the relationship between your CHWs and the clinical team, so that each group understands and values the roles of the other?
Explaining HIV/AIDS to culturally diverse and/or with low literacy audiences:
We are interested in learning from others what analogies have been used in settings around the world to explain HIV to low-literate and culturally diverse audiences. For example, we use the blanket analogy (Unit 3 - http://model.pih.org/node/506) in our current Accompagnateur curriculum.
We are also currently pilot testing our revised Accompagnateur curriculum for community health workers at our project sites in Rwanda, Haiti, Malawi and Lesotho. The curriculum uses participatory learning and training methods suited to low-literate adult learners.
- Where and how this curriculum is being used in different settings?
- What aspects of the curriculum did you need to adapt for your particular program?
- What challenges did you confront when using this curriculum?
- What recommendations do you have for how we can improve this material?
Participatory-based learning:
We would like to hear from others how participatory-based learning has impacted your training programs when working with low-literate audiences.
- What have been the challenges?
- How has the methodology used within your training programs affected the ability of your audiences or community health workers to retain information?
Whether you have reached this discussion from the PIH Model Online website (http://model.pih.org/) or directly on GHDonline, we hope you will share your ideas and reactions to the PIH Accompagnateurs Curriculum and Community Health Worker program. Thanks.
