MDR-TB Treatment & Prevention
Drug and Health Care Delivery: A perspective from Cambodia and Ethiopia
Started by Anne Goldfeld on 10 Nov 2008
In 1994, the Cambodian Health Committee (CHC) developed a novel community-based approach to TB and later to AIDS treatment, and in April 2006 universal access for MDR treatment was started nationwide.
Following topics are covered here:
- TB in Cambodia today
- TB and HIV, and MDR TB
- Introduction to The CAMELIA: TB and HIV, linking delivery and discovery
- MDR outcomes
- Leveraging CHC to assist Ethiopia (and Vietnam)
In conclusion:
- An integrated approach of hospitalized based and community based treatment has proved highly successful in treating MDR in Cambodia
- Integrated TB/HIV services necessary for approaching MDR
- Parallel processes, such as the CHC/GHC leveraging of expertise needs to be expanded
- Greater and quicker access to MDR drugs is critical
- Large scale funding for these parallel processes is needed/ on the scale of, or a “PEPFAR-like” initiative for MDR/XDR TB necessary
Presentation given during the IOM Drug Forum Workshop: Addressing the Threat of Drug Resistant TB: A Realistic Assessment of the Challenges, held November 5, 2008 in Washington, D.C.
