Building on Success: A Roadmap for HIV Prevention

Started by Sophie Beauvais on 20 Jul 2010

Among the many news from IAS 2010, the call to focus on HIV/AIDS community work and engagement for effective prevention and treatment programs by former President Bill Clinton and Bill Gates resonated with many: http://globalhealth.kff.org/Daily-Reports/2010/July/19/GH-071910-AIDS-2010-St... (video embedded here).

Also from IAS:

The CAPRISA 004 trial assessed effectiveness and safety
of a 1% vaginal gel formulation of tenofovir, a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor, for the prevention of HIV acquisition in women. The results were just presented at the International AIDS Conference in Vienna. You can read the full paper in PDF is available on Science Express: http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/rapidpdf/science.1193748v1.pdf

You can also read interesting comments in response to these results by Kenneth Mayer, MD (co-chair of the IDSA Scientific Advisory Committee http://www.idsociety.org/Content.aspx?id=13140) in Science Speaks, Antiretrovirals for Prevention: Panacea or Pandora’s Box, at this link:

Mayer notes that:

"The gel achieved close to 50 percent reduction in new HIV infections among the women who received the active gel compared to placebo gel. It also showed similar protection against HSV-2. What is particularly notable in the findings is that women who were highly adherent to using the gel before and after coitus had substantially higher levels of protection. Therefore, future ARV chemoprophylaxis interventions that better enhance product adherence will be particularly important."
