Confidentiality in HIV prevention and testing
Started by Maria May on 07 Dec 2010
Hi,
Is there any data on the role of confidentiality in patient willingness to get HIV testing? What measures are programs taking to information like HIV status, particularly in places that still use paper record systems.
Thanks!
Maria

Hi Maria,
That's a brilliant question, I previously visited a certain clinic here in Tanzania and realized that loss of confidentiality has led to a decrease in number of VCT.
I am still doing a through investigation, the following reasons might be the source
- Writing patient names on top of the folder that stores patient file, this is easily read by anyone and hence confidentiality breach. To solve this, I have advised the clinicians to write only patient unique CTC number at the cover of the folder.
- There was information leakage done by some staffs (Expert patients) who were responsible for testing and counseling. This has changed the willingness of the society to get HIV test. A number of people have decided to go for testing in the healthy centers that are far allocated.
The site uses paper record system, however there is a plan to migrate into
Computerized syatem.
Best regards,
Edwin
