TB Infection Control
Sputum collection 'stall' safety
Started by Hans Mulder on 31 Jul 2009
Dear Paul,
The sputum collection "stall" as you describe it sounds fine to me. As TB is an airborne disease and the booth is open at the top and on the sides, natural ventilation will clean the air from any pollution rather quickly. We normally prefer a outdoor set up as shown in your picture above a set up in a building or using toilets or other small rooms within the building. As long as natural ventilation is guaranteed a simple booth might be the best solution, as you want to provide some privacy to the patient. There is nothing against sputum collection in the complete open, but privacy very often plays a role.
In September I'll come to Nepal for a week for WHO to facilitate a workshop on Infection control. It would be great to receive some pictures from you or get in contact with you regarding the health facilities in Nepal.
Looking forward to hear from you.
