Tribute to Grace Egos

Started by Paul A. Jensen, PhD, PE, CIH on 13 Jul 2011

With great sadness, I acknowledge the passing of our friend and colleague, Grace Egos, last night after a very brief illness. Grace was participating in an international infection control meeting in The Hague, doing work near-and-dear to her heart. A more detailed tribute will be attached to this e-mail once I figure out how to do it!

To further celebrate Grace's life, I would like to present Grace's family and the GHDonline community with a collage of pictures. Please feel free to send me a couple pics (with date and brief description) to me at , and I will collate and "publish" for all to see.

Thanks so much. Please keep Grace's family in your prayers.

I had fortunate opportunity to work with Grace in several TB IC technical assistance missions, and TB IC related educational courses. Our current joint project is laboratory biosafety course for TB lab managers from Russia and former Soviet states, planned on beginning of September 2011 in Vladimir, Russia.

Grace was very professional and dedicated, the true example of expert with the very strong field experience. I felt that all health care professionals she worked with gratefully accepted her help and support  and treated her like friend and close colleague.

So sorry Grace left this world so early.

Its really sad to hear that she is not there with us anymore. I met her in Hyderabad when she came along with Dr. Paul, Dr. Edward, Michael and Gary to conduct the shortened version of the Harvard course here. She was extremely meticulous in her teaching, and would take time to help participants understand. My deepest condolences to her family and dear friends.

The first time I met Grace, it was back in 2004 when she presented her laboratory work at the Makati Medical centre of excellence treating MDR-TB patients. Grace's knowledge, dedication and human connection were so evident even during the first interactions. Since then and in the different settings, I had the privilege of working with Grace, she was kind, attentive, knowledgable, modest and smart. When I heard the news, it was a big shock to me, it was really difficult to concentrate on the content of the meeting afterwards. Grace you will be always on our minds and in our hearts. God bless you, I am pretty sure if heaven is place for some of us, you would be among those who really deserve it. May your soul rest in peace.

It's so sad to hear the news. I remember the 2 of us walking from Hostel to the Prudential in Boston during the infection control course, taking pictures along the way.. she had a lot going on with her work, and gave me an insight into labs and infection control in general. She will be missed, may her soul rwest in peace.

Ms. Grace Evangelista Egos was laid to rest in her hometown in Mabini, Batangas, Philippines yesterday, Sunday July 24, 2011. A tribute was organized for her on Friday by the Tropical Disease Foundation (TDF), Makati City where Grace spent eight fruitful years of her life (2002-2010). Friends and colleagues from TDF spoke about Grace as a kind-hearted, and sincere mentor, adviser, and friend, and a dedicated and professional TB laboratory and infection control expert who always wore a cheerful smile. Messages from international colleagues and partners were read. Dr. Kitty van Weezenbeek of WHO-WPRO, Manila, spoke in behalf of WHO, and all other technical partners, and the countries that Grace had assisted, about the impact of her work in saving lives. Grace's contribution to TB control in the Philippines and in different parts of the world will always be remembered.

In behalf of the Tropical Disease Foundation, we thank all those who condoled with us, her colleagues and friends, and her family.
