Malaria Treatment & Prevention

ACT procurement still remains a bottleneck

Started by Prashant Yadav on 13 Feb 2010

Reporting from Kigali,Rwanda after a few days of discussions and deliberations at the national malaria control program best practice sharing workshop organized by Novartis.

A quick survey that a colleague and I conducted at this workshop shows that most program managers consider delays in procurement to be the key factor leading to stockouts of ACTs in health facilities. All country malaria supply specialists acknowledged that they fully understand and support the interventions such as framework contracts etc. that increase procurement efficiency, but there is lack of political will to do procurement reform in most countries and also by some large donors.

I wonder what can the malaria treatment implementation and operational research community do to build a stronger case for more efficient procurement for drugs?
