Spatial Repellents

Started by Michael Reddy on 19 Jan 2012

In the interest of stirring up some discussion on novel approaches to malaria vector control, I'd like to get some thoughts/ critiques of the use of spatial repellents as a means of addressing host-seeking by exophagic (outdoor-feeding) mosquitoes. This is a topic that has received scant attention in the malaria/vector control literature and I believe needs further review/evaluation. As such, I'd like to offer the following paper as a starting point for discussion. A few questions/comments to keep in mind while considering the topic:
1) In what context do folks see this approach being most appropriate? (personal/intra-domicilliary use), village/community level...etc?)
2) What would the price point have to be for individuals, communities, NMCPs, regional/international donors to consider spatial repellents in lieu or in addition to existing indoor-based interventions (e.g. LLINs and IRS)
3) Would you (the reader) find such an approach more or less preferable to existing indoor interventions

Please feel free to expand or re-direct this conversation to address issues related to the development and/or use of spatial repellents for vector control efforts. I look forward to learning from the communities comments on the topic. Best, -MR
