HOW DOES MALARIA VACCINE Pfs25-EPA/Alhydrogel HELP IN BLOCKING MALARIA PARASITES FROM DEVELOPING INTO MOSQUITOES.
Innocent ALI
The Pfs25 molecule is expressed predominantly in the zygote of the mosquito. The zygote contains the mixed DNA material from the male and female parasite gametes. This zygote must develop, undergo cell division to produce sporozoites which can be injected to human body when a mosquito is taking a blood meal. If someone is vaccinated with the anti-Pfs25 vaccine and then is beaten by the mosquito, the mosquito is very likely to take up large quantities of the antiPfs25 vaccine. This vaccine will block Pfs25 essential during the zygote development. blocking zygote development blocks the further development of the parasite leading to no transmission. We can know if the vaccination is working if people are beaten by the mosquito but do not develop the disease and when reports from the hospital show that the incidence of malaria had decreased following vaccination. However, these are best assessed in a well designed study.
