Using schoolteachers to lessen the burden of screening for childhood NCDs on trained CHWs in rural developing areas

Started by Rohit Thummalapalli on 12 Jun 2012

Hi everyone, I just published a paper recently describing the design and implementation of a community health program in rural India aimed at educating teachers to screen their students for eye disease in government-run public schools. Especially in areas such as rural Andhra Pradesh, where trained ophthalmic specialists are at a premium, looking to use non-health care professionals to address some of the burden of childhood NCDs is a useful goal. I hope this paper will help continue the discussion into the types of community agents which can be used to effectively address NCDs at the community level. The paper can be found at: http://hej.sagepub.com/content/early/2012/06/04/0017896912446550.abstract?rss=1

Dear Rohit,

I just ha d a quick run through your paper, and I personally think it is quite an innovative form of task shifting by use of various entry points that are not necessarily clinical.

Im interested on understanding how the referrals are done to health facilities in such away that they are effective in the sense that the children actually turn for treatment at the public health facilities.

Are there any best practices i can learn from and possibly share the referral model used for this intervention as well as how the CHWs fit into the framework.

Looking forward to your feedback and Kudos for the insightful intervention!

Regards,

Donald
