FW: Opportunity for 4 month supported volunteer post in Kenya or Ghana!

Started by Lynda Wilson on 22 Sep 2009

Dear Colleagues,

I am sending this to a number of my nursing colleagues, wondering if you might have an interest in a 4-month volunteer opportunity teaching in a nursing program in Kenya or Ghana. The immediate need is for four nurses starting next January 2010, but faculty interested in planning a sabbatical for next year could also consider this opportunity.

I recently met with Susan Ely, Executive Director of Encore Service Corps (see their website at www.encoreservicecorps.org<http://www.encoreservicecorps.org>). This organization works to place volunteers (especially returned Peace Corps Volunteers) on short-term overseas volunteer projects. With funding from the Johnson & Johnson Corporation, they are working to expand nursing capacity in several African countries, including Ghana and Kenya. They are looking for "volunteers "who would be willing to spend four months in either Ghana or Kenya to teach and work to enhance capacity at several nursing schools. "Volunteers" would have all expenses paid for travel and living in the host country, and receive a small stipend to cover cost of living expenses during the assignment.

In Ghana they are working with Valley View University in Oyibi...they need two expert volunteers to teach one or more third-year courses in mental health, community health, maternal and newborn nursing, medical surgical nursing, and/or to teach community health workshops. This school was started in 1979 by West African Union Mission of the Seventh-day Adventist church, and now is the first private institution in Ghana to be granted accreditation..it is 20 miles from Accra (see www.vvu.edu/gh/academics/departments/nursing/course.html<http://www.vvu.edu/g...>.

In Kenya they are looking for two expert volunteers to teach one or more undergraduate courses in critical care nursing, adult health/medical surgical nursing, and community health nursing, and master's level courses in HIV/AIDS and nursing informatics at Moi University (MU). This university has also requested faculty training in collaborative research, curriculum development, protocol development, renal, accidental/emergency care, critical care, neonatal care and burns. MU is located in Eldoret, Kenya. For further information see www.mu.ac.ke/academic/schools/medicine/index.html<http://www.mu.ac.ke/academi...> or www.chs.mu.ac.ke<http://www.chs.mu.ac.ke>.

If you are interested in learning more, or if you know of anyone who may be interested, please share this email and information with them. I am attaching a flyer with further information.

If interested, please contact Susan Ely at <mailto:> or call her at 202 299-0489.

All good wishes! Lynda Wilson

This is such a wonderful opportunity. Can this be done by team teaching methodology?
It will help at least spread the days off from work.
Thanks.
