Global Health Conference: advancing health equity in the 21st century. Nov 13-15, 2011, Montreal

Started by Maggie Sullivan on 20 Jul 2011

*Abstract deadline 8/1/11 (see below)

Individuals as diverse as G8 leaders, undergraduate students and community-based service providers increasingly recognize that the world needs to better understand global health challenges and their solutions. Yet what global health means continues to be defined as many people seek to understand how we may effectively collaborate across cultures, disciplines, languages and sometimes wide-ranging differences in resources and training to solve shared challenges to ensuring equitable health for all. The obstacles are substantial, but the opportunities are greater. This fall marks one such opportunity, when the Global Health Education Consortium (GHEC), the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) and the Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) will come together from November 13-15 to hold a joint global health conference in Montreal, Canada. Harnessing the energy of these three leading societies, this combined conference will be a unique chance to showcase and shape global health research, education and advocacy with colleagues from across the wide spectrum of backgrounds, interests and stages of training that make global health the dynamic field that it is.

With world-renowned keynote speakers and plenary panels, invited speakers, oral abstracts and poster presentations from across the many disciplines that contribute to the growth and development of global health, the joint 2011 conference should be an exciting and educational event for any practitioner, researcher or learner in this emerging field. In addition, special activities will be held specifically to address the interests of trainees and individuals new to global health.

The conference will take place at the Hilton Montreal Bonaventure in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and more information will be available soon about registration, abstract submission and program details. The conference events will begin with an opening session on Sunday morning followed by three full days of sessions on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Conference sessions, including plenary lectures, invited symposia and panels, and both oral and poster presentations of submitted abstracts, will be organized across the following broad themes:

-Global burden of disease
-Innovations and interventions to advance global Health equity
-Globalization, global trade and movement of populations as drivers of health inequity
-Partnerships and capacity building for education and research in global health
-Social, economic and environmental determinants of health
-Human rights, legal issues, ethics and policy

We look forward to welcoming you to one of North America’s greatest cities for an engaging and exciting scientific program at one of the largest academic global health meetings in North America.

Timothy Brewer, MD, MPH, FACP
Program Committee Chair

Hi Swaleha, I would recommend contacting Doris Steinbach directly at . Also, there is more detailed information regarding financial assistance on their website (http://www.2011globalhealth.org/financialAssistance.html).

Financial Assistance

CUGH, GHEC and CSIH are committed to supporting training and education opportunities in global health. To help facilitate the participation of individuals from low-resource areas, limited financial assistance in the form of a reduced or waived registration fee is available to individual participants who have had an abstract accepted for presentation at the Conference. Sponsored delegates are not eligible for financial assistance.

Conference Scholarships: A limited number of scholarships will be available to participants with accepted abstracts. After being notified that your abstract has been accepted for inclusion in the conference, individuals wishing to request a scholarship should send an e-mail to conference organizers, (email: ) by August 1, 2011. Scholarships may provide for a waiver or reduction in the registration fee. Travel, accomodation and other associated costs cannot be covered by the conference organizers and are the responsibility of the individual. In allocating scholarships, the Program Committee will give preference to individuals who are from low-resource countries.
