Nurse-driven, community-supported, HIV/AIDS treatment at the primary health care level in rural Lesotho
The 2006-2008 program report, news article and power point slides describe a nurse-based, community-supported program offering comprehensive HIV/AIDS care and treatment integrated into existing primary health care activities in 14 rural clinics and one district hospital in Lesotho. Highlights include the general model of care; the role task-shifting has played in expanding access to treatment; a description of task allocation among health workers, including nurse-initiated and managed ART (NIMART) for adults and children; and lay counselor-managed testing and counseling; adherence support, and "case management" for people on ART and TB treatment.
