Does anyone know of any organizations that might offer volunteer opportunities that include nurse education in resource poor areas?

Are you thinking in terms of nursing education for the nurses themselves? Or
for nurses to do education in under-served areas?

Thanks for the clarification question Michelle. I was interested in educating nurses. I am wondering if I have not seen opportunities in this capacity because they either do not exist or are not appropriate for volunteers. I would like to gain some international health experience, so I began looking for volunteer opportunities. Since I have an MSN with an education concentration, I was wondering if there was a way to utilize my strength while gaining exposure/experience too. If not, then doing public education would be a preference. I apologize for my ignorance as I am just beginning to explore my role and interests in global health.

Hi Terri,

Our organization, Hope for Haiti Foundation, works outside of Jacmel, Haiti and we take several medical trips each year centered around medical staff training. We run a primary care clinic in a rural area, and our Haitian nursing staff is always eager to receive more information. There is a great need for this type of training. The training topics are chosen by our Haitian staff based on the skill set of medical personnel traveling to Haiti (cardiology, midwifery, etc.) You can check our website at www.hopeforhaitifoundation.com for our upcoming trip dates, or you can email me at for more information. Thanks! Lydia

Thanks for the clarification Terri! I am an FNP working in a rural clinic
in Kenya. I always love when we have professional volunteers who come and
either work directly in the clinic or do training in our staff. I'd love to
talk with you further about the possibility of your coming. You can private
message me at for more information.

Hello, Terri. If you speak portuguese or are willing to learn Portuguese, there are opportunities for nursing education in Angola at Rio da Huila Hospital, for volunteers who want to gain an international health experience. I can be contacted at . If you speak Spanish it is an easy jump to learn Portuguese.
Best regards, Karen Dr Karen Henriksen, CP 33, Lubango, Angola.

Hi Terri,
This is a great question. Thank you for posting it. We're all learning here, so any and all questions are welcome! In addition to the wonderful suggestions made, you can also puruse the "work/volunteer abroad" category (on the right hand side of this home page) which has some additional suggestions. Hopefully others will continue sharing their ideas as well. Feel free to let us know if you speak any other language(s), if you have an interest in a particular health topic or country/part of the world, and we can provide more specific suggestions. Again, thanks for your question! -Maggie

Thank you to all who have replied so far. I really appreciate your assistance, direction, support and resources. Just a little more information from me. Unfortunately, I do not speak any other language besides English. I have experience backpacking and traveling with very few creature comforts. I have traveled to Costa Rica x2, Ecuador, and Belize, among places in Europe. I prefer central/south America, but know that my lack of Spanish or other languages is an issue. I would especially like to go to Belize if anyone knows of opportunites there. Lleni, I was very interested in your volunteer needs and would like more information if possible. Feel free to email me directly at

Hi Terri,

I haven't had the chance to work with this group in Belize, but certainly am interested and have had several informative conversations with the director via email. Thought you might be interested as well since you're looking for nursing education opportunities in Belize. Check out the website for Hillside Belize at http://www.hillsidebelize.net/.
