Rio Declaration on Social Determinants of Health
The Rio Declaration on Social Determinants of Health will express global political commitment for the implementation of a social determinants of health approach to reduce health inequities and to achieve other global priorities. It will help to build momentum within WHO Member States for the development of dedicated national action plans and strategies. The first consultation on the declaration, convened by the Government of Brazil, is being held at WHO headquarters on 7 September, 2011, with several more meetings planned before the conference.
Conference venue has been expanded
In light of the considerable demand to attend the conference, the venue has been substantially expanded to accommodate more participants from across the globe. WHO is pleased to announce that a limited number of additional invitations can be issued to those individuals who are willing to fund their participation on their own. If you would like to be considered, please send a request to as soon as possible (by 23 September at the latest) with your name, email address, country of origin and institutional affiliation, and briefly explain why you would like to attend. The final decision on attendance will be made by the Conference Secretariat.
European review of social determinants of health - latest news
The second interim report on the 'European review of social determinants of health and the health divide' has now been released. Drafted by a team based at University College London and led by Sir Michael Marmot, the report will be discussed during the upcoming Meeting of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe in Baku, Azerbaijan on 12-15 September, 2011.
