Good evening Peter, I am a bread and butter general surgeon with 20 years
of private practice experience with emphasis on trauma and laparoscopic
surgery. As I transition from full time clinical practice, would be
interested in exploring various volunteer opportunities. I recently
networked with Glenn Geelhoed at the ACS in SF, and found the conference
very receptive to facilitating such experience. This is a new focus in
outreach for the ACS, long overdue. Best wishes from Steinbeck Country,

This is a very encouraging thread to read. I'm currently doing my junior doctor rotations in the UK and am an aspiring surgeon, with an interest in global surgery. I head a network of postgraduate doctors with an interest in global health. Surgery is something we always struggle with, as there is a lot of anxiety about whether volunteer surgical posts abroad will be sufficiently supported or supervised. We've been working on publishing details of placements in the medical specialities, peads and obs and gynae.
I'd be interested to hear whether there would be similar interest and support for a global surgery (and anaesthesia) type network, for surgeons wanted some international experience? So that people can publish their experiences and ensure that if surgeons do leave their recognized training programmes that they gain an appropriate experience abroad.
I'd welcome your thoughts?

Hi Mike,
Nice to hear about your interest. We recently had a "How to..." paper accepted in the journal SURGERY which will hopefully be published shortly.
I also saw that Dr. Philip Alexander of Lady Willingdon Hospital in Manali, India responded. I've been there and know Philip and I think it would be an excellent location for a first time mission. Philip is a great surgeon, the set up and accommodations are great, they are used to having visitors and the location is hard to beat.
If you want more specific information, feel free to email me at .
Cheers,
Adam

Dear All
I don't know how this email trail took the wrong turn in the road but it neither originated with me nor is appropriate for me. I am not a "bread and butter General Surgeon" and I'm not looking for a "first international volunteer opportunity." I've been working with PIH in Haiti and Rwanda for a number of years and am the Director of Surgery for PIH. If someone knows how to redirect this conversation, please feel free to do so.
Thanks in advance

Dr. Klein,
I'm in Southern California and have worked in a number of different settings in rural areas (Africa primarily)- from working within an NGO structure to just going on my own to work at a local hospital. I'd be happy to chat about working overseas. My email is
best,
Nadine

Nadine, Thanks for your reply. I have just begun networking with several
colleagues thru ACS connections, as well as worth of mouth. Thinking about
my first stint this summer with Philip Alexander in Manali, India. Philip
graciously replied to my online inquiry, and was highly recommended by Adam
Kushner of SOS. Manali has direct flight service out of Delhi, Lady
Wellingdon has a very busy surgical service, and Philip sounds like a great
guy. Otherwise, I was recently coached by Sherry Wren, who is active in a
variety of volunteer programs, including what I would consider higher risk
settings. Look forward to schmoozing when convenient. Some nibbles in
Africa too. KInd regards from Steinbeck Country, Mike 831-809-3600
