Potential synergies between surgical infrastructure and male circumcision scale up for HIV prevention
Started by Bobby Shady on 24 May 2010
Ever since clinical trials in South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda demonstrated male circumcision to be approximately 60% effective in reducing female-to-male HIV transmission, there has been a growing emphasis on scaling up male circumcision for HIV prevention. As we launch a new GHDonline community focused on HIV Prevention, we wanted to reach out to the Global Surgery community to better understand if there are potential synergies between the scale up of male circumcision and existing surgical infrastructure or models. Are there currently any surgery scale-up efforts that could easily add a male circumcision component? Could surgery programs capitalize on the current influx of resources and infrastructure needed to scale up male circumcision? Are there particular interventions that would benefit more than others? Please post your response in our new HIV Prevention community here: http://www.ghdonline.org/hivprevention/discussion/potential-synergies-between...

I sent the following response to this discussion link. Please add comments on the HIV prevention community site as well as our surgery site. I’m anxious to hear if anyone has more information. nbs
Unfortunately I am not aware of any significant ongoing surgery scale-up efforts. It may be that surgery actually piggy-backs on the male circumcision scale up. There are ongoing programs in many countries in which non-surgeon providers are being given surgical training, especially in techniques that are very well defined. Male circumcision could certainly meet this criteria.
Hopefully other members of our community will add additional comments. It would be great to work together on these efforts.
