TeleCases and Grand Rounds in Rwanda

Started by Catherine deVries on 19 Dec 2011

Grand Rounds in Rwanda: Yesterday, through a collaboration between the Utah Center for Global Surgery, the Utah TeleHealth Network (UTN) and IVUmed, we held the first TeleSurgery Grand Rounds and case conference. Our Rwandan colleagues presented 5 challenging pediatric urological cases, and Brock O'Neil, our urology resident, gave a PowerPoint presentation on posterior urethral valves. The dialogue was great, and this sets a new standard for increasing educational activity while reducing our carbon footprint!

This is wonderful!
Congratulations on this work- and please keep us up to date as you continue with these efforts. And if others, from outside your university can help- please let us know.

Thanks, Nadine and Lars. We have a very robust TeleHealth system at the University of Utah, but it has focused on rural healthcare in the Intermountain West region. We have tested it in Haiti (and actually have excellent TeleSurgery with laparoscopy) capability in Pignon, Haiti. We are now doing an inventory of the technical capacity in the countries where we have partnerships Since any one center could not easily fill the educational needs, it will be good to build a consortium of universities for TeleHealth education.
