Could you recommend a methodology that can be used for assessing the use of electronic patient records on reducing patient waiting time at a clinic?

Hi Lorraine,
I would suggest you look at this paper from the Regenstrief group which did exactly that using time motion analysis.

Rotich JK, Hannan TJ, Smith FE, Bii J, Odero WW, Vu N, et al. Installing and implementing a computer-based patient record system in sub-Saharan Africa: the Mosoriot Medical Record System. J Am Med Inform Assoc. 2003 Jul-Aug;10(4):295-303.

This group was also one of the first to use time motion analysis in health care and have a several papers describing its use and how to perform it such as
Overhage JM, Perkins S, Tierney WM, McDonald CJ. Controlled trial of direct physician order entry: effects on physicians' time utilization in ambulatory primary care internal medicine practices. J Am Med Inform Assoc. 2001 Jul-Aug;8(4):361-71.

And here's a description of the two different methods that can be used
Wirth P, Kahn L, Perkoff GT. Comparability of two methods of time and motion study used in a clinical setting: work sampling and continuous observation. Med Care. 1977 Nov;15(11):953-60.

If you need access to any of these papers feel free to email me directly jblaya at hms.harvard.edu

Warm regards,

Joaquin
