International training on Rehabilitation and Prevention of Disability (RPOD)

Training outline:
1. Anatomy and function of the eye, hand and foot
2. Diagnosis and treatment of leprosy, reaction and neuritis
3. Assessment and recording of nerve function impairment (NFI) in the eyes, hands & feet
4. Treatment of Nerve Function Impairment.
5. Prevention, management & correction of secondary impair-ments
6. Effective promotion of self-care
7. Assessment and reduction of activity limitations
8. Assessment and reduction of participation restrictions
9. Managing a Prevention of Disability (POD) program

Methodology:
Training will be based on principles of adult learning, and include:
 State-of-the-art lectures
 Interactive learning activities
 Group work

Target group:
 Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Medical Doctors, Senior leprosy workers
 General health workers currently involved in the prevention and management disability.

Course prerequisite:
Competence in written and spoken English

Venues and Dates: BIKASH Nepal, Pokhara, Nepal. 20 February-02 March 2012 (2 weeks).
 Additional weeks of in-service training are available if pre-arranged.
 Participants without or little knowledge in leprosy and/or rehabilitation are advised to register for a one week in-service orientation prior to the commencement of the formal training.

Main facilitators:
 Anne Roberts (Ethiopia), Anne is a physiotherapist with experience working in the field of leprosy in India and Ethiopia. She has a Masters degree in Medical Education.
 Dr J Wim Brandsma, Rehabilitation Consultant. Wim trained in The Netherlands as a physiotherapist and completed his PhD on the intrinsic muscles of the hand. He has spent more than 30 years specialising in leprosy, based in Ethiopia (ALERT), Uganda (Kumi), India (SLR&TC, Karigiri), Nepal (GPH & BIKASH, Pokhara) and the USA (Carville, Louisiana) will co-facilitate in this course.
 Senior hospital staff from Green Pastures Hospital and Rehabilitation Center and the Partnership for Rehabilitation pro-gram (Nepal).

Training fee:
US$ 1200 including full board and lodging. The course fee also covers required educational materials, field visits and local transportation.

Certification:
A certificate will be awarded at the end of the training on successful completion.
