Just Starting with Open MRS in a Rural Clinic in Kenya

Started by Michelle Kiprop on 18 Jul 2011

I'm managing a Health Center in the Uasin Gishu District in the Rift Valley of Kenya. We are just over an hour's drive from Eldoret. We recently were able to get a copy of the Open MRS software. I'm hoping to launch use of it at our clinic sometime in the coming months. At this point we know very little about it. I do know that it has been used in this area at other facilities. I'm hoping to connect with other facilities in this region who may be able to give me advice or troubleshoot as we get started. Thank you!

Michelle, Hello. I teach a health informatics course, and I would be most interested to hear more about your experiences in implementing OpenMRS. Ultimately, I would like to share some real-life implementation experiences with students. If you Tweet or Blog, please let me know. Otherwise, I might be interested in speaking with you at some point in the coming months. -- Ed Bunker ().

There are plenty of installations in Kenya for you to learn from. The first installation of OpenMRS was at AMPATH in Eldoret. There is one in Kisumu by the CDC and in Sauri by MVP. There are several planned in NBO at larger hospitals that I know of as well.

AMPATH gives trainings around different aspects of using/building/developing OpenMRS. See http://reach.ampath.or.ke/

There is an OpenMRS in Kenya google group as well: https://groups.google.com/group/openmrs-kenya?hl=en&pli=1
