Mobile Health: The potential of mobile telephony to bring healthcare to the majority
Started by Sophie Beauvais on 09 Jan 2009
This paper looks at the possibilities, development and implications offered by mobile technologies to support and improve the delivery of health care services in Latin America, where there is an estimated 70% mobile penetration.
As the authors explain in their executive summary, “Latin America is home to several areas of good practice, including initial efforts to link its research institutions/universities with international centers. If this collaboration is supported and deepened, technology transfer from the more mature markets can encourage local innovation in the longer term.”
They examine the current and emerging trends in mobile health, from surveillance to diagnostic systems, demonstrate the potential for mobile technologies with several cases, and take a deeper look at the value chain of mobile health, including a table taking a stab at explaining what is stopping some of these projects to getting to scale.
This Innovation Note was produced by the Science and Technology Division of the Inter-American Development Bank with support from the Knowledge Partnership Korean Fund for Technology and Innovation.
