National Dog bite & Rabies surveillance using OpenXdata & Google earth

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share a video about the National Dog bite and Rabies surveillance we're conducting in Pakistan. In this study, data is being collected completely paperlessly on mobile phones using the openXdata server/client on the Nokia 6220c (~USD 230). These are the lowest-end GPS and Java-enabled cell phone we found (however, openxdata can run on a $50 phone as well). We're also using a google earth web-portal to monitor our fieldwork, both our field workers and general progress of the study by using GPS coordinates to ensure fielworker attendance and visualizing data via graphs based on specific study sites.

One thing you learn very quickly is how difficult it is to monitor/validate data in a national study when the project coordinator is based out of one location and you have surveillance happening in several cities. The forms on openxdata allow me to add in skip/valiation logic which has proved to be invaluable, along with capturing GPS.

Here's a short clip to show you what it all looks like:

Cheers,

Hi Julia,

I am delighted to see this happening in Pakistan. Are there any other
similar surveillance projects that are using the same technology? In
specific, has this been used for community-based surveys anywhere in
Pakistan?

Regards,
Usman

Hi Usman,

We have a couple of projects running in Karachi using mobile technology,
EMRs, and google earth. Here are a few videos to showcase that work:

MDR-TB Program: (technologies used: OpenMRS, OpenXdata, google earth)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7RoBIO1xaU

Pneumonia Surveillance study - here we're using RFID for patient
identification for followup visits (technologies used: Interactive alerts,
customized openxdata, google earth & openClinica)

A video showcasing the use of google earth for visualizing data:

In mobile devices we've used both PDAs and cell phones. Generally most of
our projects use the same technology, sometimes we customize it to be more
appropriate for a specific study. For example, in the Pneumonia surveillance
study, we had to add:
1.an SMS module to the mobile application for real-time alerts,
2. the ability to search for existing cohort patients
3. autopopulation basic demographic information about the patient in
follow-up encounter forms, to reduce redundancy.

All the technologies we use are open source, which makes it all very
affordable. :)
