Type: Non-Governmental Organization
Country: Liberia
About: Tiyatien Health is a 501(c)(3) non-profit social justice organization that builds equitable models of primary healthcare within the public sector. Organized as a unique partnership between rural communities and Liberia- and US-based health professionals Tiyatien, meaning "truth" and "justice" in a local Liberian dialect, promotes equity by advancing healthcare services and the fundamental rights of the poor.
In February 2007, Tiyatien Health, in partnership with the Liberian Ministry of Health and the National AIDS Control Program, launched the HIV Equity Initiative – Liberia’s first comprehensive, community-based HIV treatment program – at the Martha Tubman Memorial Hospital in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County. The HIV Equity Initiative (HEI) has successfully provided comprehensive health and social services to a growing group of over 100 HIV-infected individuals. The backbone of HEI’s success is its network of community health workers, called “accompaniers,” who provide long-term medical, moral and psychosocial support to HIV-positive individuals and their communities.
