About Bria Sharkey
I am currently a medical student at the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I have had the opportunity to participate in research related to type 2 diabetes in aboriginal adolescents. As a research assistant, I helped to deliver an exercise training program to youth with the aim of prevention and control of type 2 diabetes. Additionally, I participated in a pilot project in diabetes management designed to establish and evaluate the effectiveness of an exercise facility in Garden Hill First Nation. This is a remote aboriginal community in northern Manitoba with one of the highest rates of youth-onset type 2 diabetes in Canada, and I am interested in continuing to work with this community in my future career. I know that I can learn a great deal about health care delivery from the GHE program and am very excited to be a participant.
