Hans Mulder replied to "Controversies in TB Transmission Control: How important is natural ventilation to the spread of tuberculosis?" in the TB Infection Control community.
Interesting discussion. Just back from a mission in Kenya and a mission to Ethiopia. I fully agree on the fact that we should see these technologies as complementary. There might be one or two problems with this as I have noticed on my visits to other hospitals. The more systems available within one building / room / waiting area the more you run the risk of having them clashing with each other. Most of the ...

Hans Mulder started a discussion "Sputum collection 'stall' safety" in the TB Infection Control community.
Dear Paul, The sputum collection "stall" as you describe it sounds fine to me. As TB is an airborne disease and the booth is open at the top and on the sides, natural ventilation will clean the air from any pollution rather quickly. We normally prefer a outdoor set up as shown in your picture above a set up in a building or using toilets or other small rooms within the building. As long as ...

Hans Mulder replied to "Infection control at home" in the TB Infection Control community.
Dear all, Coming from the land of Whirleys, here are some pictures of them. As Paul mentioned they are known under a lot of names, but the principal is the same. Dear all, The only thing I can think of to improve temperature within the building is with glazing like in the old "Winter Gardens"/glass houses. If you, in your case, would have a glazed verandah / "stoep" facing to the north, on sunny days people might feel the warmth behind the glass without feeling a draft. In general not much sun is needed to get a warm feeling behind glass. This area should only be ...

Hans Mulder replied to "FENCING MDR TB(GENERAL TB) TREATMENT FACILITIES" in the TB Infection Control community.
Interesting topic. Opposite to Robin Vincent-Smith observation, I have seen some fenced in wards / health facilities in Africa. Very often, this has been done to control flow of patients within these areas, most of the time with an adverse effect. Patients feel locked up and try to escape prison. One thing we have to keep in mind is the area we talking about. Health facilities in Africa might need more protection as a public ...
