Naman Shah started a discussion "Measuring malaria incidence". in the Malaria Treatment & Prevention community.
How should we measure malaria burden? Why are disease burden estimates important? There are two sets of reasons: 1) technical, e.g. national priority setting etc and 2) political economy of health, e.g. advocacy and visibility, donor influence, etc. Thus, estimates are often quite contentious apart from the methodology used. The ...

Naman Shah replied to "Seasonal prevention of malaria in African children" in the Malaria Treatment & Prevention community.
Dr Gosling, it is my pleasure. 1) Yes, MDA will be more effective in lower transmission settings. We know from models and practice that the infectious reservoir is, proportionally, a greater determinant of transmission when vectorial capacity is low. I think MDA is worth some experimenting but it depends on ...

Even as an additive to other control options, IRS for example, MDA provided little lasting benefit (in hyperendemic settings) despite high coverage and the rigor of a study setting. See the amazing data from the WHO Garki project report of the 70s. Even those it's a useful strategy for other ...

Naman Shah replied to "Wonder of Zanzibar." in the Malaria Treatment & Prevention community.
Charlie the Smith article overstates itself. It’s great, but unsurprising, that Zanzibar has reduced malaria using drugs and vector control tools of known effectiveness. Of course, the efforts of the control program should at least be maintained or even transitioned into elimination if sustained funding is possible. But Zanzibar’s experience ...
