Ugochi Nwosu started a discussion "Obama's approach to PEPFAR funding" in the HIV Prevention community.
Focus on providing treatment for AIDS or expand the focus of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to include other health issues plaguing developing countries? That is the question facing Barack Obama as his Global Health Initiative (GHI) program comes under attack for decreasing PEPFAR funding for ARVs and expanding the program’s HIV/AIDS focus to prevention and long term care. It seems Obama’s GHI program seeks to expand the success of PEPFAR in ...

Ugochi Nwosu started a discussion "Gender specific HIV prevention" in the HIV Prevention community.
An interview appeared today in Reuters with Jane Wilson, the UNAIDS Asia-Pacific gender advisor. She argued that due to increases in infection rates in women (from 19% of new infections to 35% in the Asia-Pacific region from 1990 to 2007), gender targeted prevention efforts were necessary to stem incidence rates in women. As a response to the current economic climate, Gates urged for greater efficiency in utilizing limited resources to implement known cost-effective interventions to prevent the spread of HIV infections. Gates highlighted that scaling up prevention methods like male circumcision, counseling sex workers and needle exchange programs, was necessary ...

Ugochi Nwosu started a discussion "Criminalization of HIV Transmission" in the HIV Prevention community.
After reading the recent news articles from Germany about a HIV+ pop singer facing trial for having unprotected sex, I looked into resources on the effect of policies criminalizing HIV transmission on prevention efforts, but I could only find resources concerning the criminalization of sex work, drug use or risk factors. Are there any studies that show the effect of laws barring transmission? There's some background on the case here: http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/08/16/german-pop-singer-on-trial-for-concealing-h-i-v-status-from-sexual-partners/
