New Lancet article on universal health coverage in Mexico

Started by Benn Grover on 23 Aug 2012

Hi all-

We wanted to share with you a new article in the Lancet by Felicia Knaul and others that analyzes Seguro Popular - Mexico's universal health insurance program that covers more than 50 million people. The article highlights the success of Seguro Popular in guaranteeing social protection of health across three components: against health risks, for patients through quality assurance of health care, and against financial consequences of disease or injury.

Thanks for the article.

Mexican civil society commentaries highlight that while increased health
services are an important step for the country, the coverage and access
provided is not at a level appropriate to call it universal coverage. In
some of the poorest areas in Mexico (i.e. Cherán, Michoacán), only 18% of
the population uses these services. There are also co-pays involved for
some essential services that many of the poorest citizens cannot pay for.

Although it is a step in the appropriate direction, this is just to
highlight the large gaps in the program. Much work is still needed before
this becomes a "universal healthcare system" by any means.

Thanks for sharing Gloria!

As much as it's great progress to move towards UHC and we should celebrate it, you are right to draw attention backs to the cracks in the "universality", in practice. Maybe we shouldn't view UHC as goal you meet once and then we strop striving for better. UHC on paper is not much if health inequities persist or even grow. Every day at the hospital in Canada, I see cracks in our "universal" system and wonder how we can truly call our system universal.

Thanks!
