Technology represents a prime opportunity to engage patients in improving their health. The Commonwealth Fund and the Global Health Delivery Project at Harvard University have partnered to find breakthrough opportunities and ideas in health IT for patient engagement. These are global challenges that require voices from around the world to identify solutions. Health professionals have keen insights and observations on this challenge, but require space to adopt, operationalize and iterate continuously.

What is a breakthrough opportunity?

Breakthrough Opportunity: n. An emerging idea for a different way that technologies, care delivery processes, organizational models, incentives, or policies could, if scaled, bring about societal-level change, reduce costs, and improve quality.

For example...

  • Leveraging patient-collected data on activity levels, mood, treatment adherence, etc. to develop a monitoring and early-warning system for providers to recommend targeted, timely, interventions.
  • A policy that establishes financial incentives for virtual visits, stimulating innovation and adoption of this practice and allowing patients to more easily consult with specialists and manage their care.

David Blumenthal, MD, MPP, President of the Commonwealth Fund and Former National Coordinator for Health Information Technology

Frequently Asked Questions

A breakthrough idea is an emerging technology, care delivery process, organizational model, incentive, or policy that, if scaled, could bring about societal-level change, reduce costs, and improve quality.

“Enabling consumers to make choices about what care they get, where they receive it, under what circumstances its delivered and to make choices about who they get it from and what they receive that could really dramatically change the way providers of care relate to patients and also that could enable people to care for themselves in dramatically new ways. Thats a theme we call “IT enabled consumer engagement” and the key ingredient is information and communication technology and its empowering capability.” — David Blumenthal, MD, President of the Commonwealth Fund
