Mrs. Eva Maria Ruiz de Castilla is Director of the ESPERANTRA NGO since 2006, in charge of Cancer Control Programs and Patient Advocacy, her work has been oriented to improve the quality of life of patients with cancer, health promotion and recognition of the rights of patients to achieve access to timely diagnosis, treatment and care worthy impacting by public policies that encourage the development and acknowledgment of health as a fundamental right for the Peruvian people.

She’s Industrial Engineer and has PhD studies in Economic Development by the EHESS and also in Political Science by the Sorbonne University Paris 1. She’s an expert on issues of social development, humanitarian action and public policy.

She has made several publications and papers related to development, health and citizen engagement, being invited as a speaker to more than 100 national and international congresses. She has conducted workshops on empowerment, building capacity, motivation and support.

She has been consultant for the United Nations in social development programs for MERCOSUR. She’s founder of the Peruvian Patient network and the Coalition of Cancer Patients and chronic diseases from where it has been achieved important issues in public health of Peru. She’s board member of the International Alliance of Patients Organizations and also CSO representative at Committee of Quality at National Council of Health.

Her experience and involvement with civil society made her worthy of a lot of recognition, among them the First Price of best practices for NGO’s “Excelencia Latina 2009” from the American Cancer Society. Since 2011 she is ACS Global Cancer Ambassador for UN.
