Bio

Mark has been a healthcare professional for more than 15 years at Novant Health. In those years, he has worked in health information management, language services, and patient education. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and he majored in Spanish. Mark worked closely with Charlotte’s Latino community as he spent five years as a Spanish interpreter. During this time, he learned a lot about the difficulties Latinos face when entering the US health system.

As a coordinator, he also helped grow the interpreter services department from what used to be a single hospital department in Charlotte, to a department that now serves 13 acute care medical centers, 400+ physician offices, and more than 100 outpatient rehabilitation, imaging, and surgery centers across the organization’s 4 state footprint (NC, SC, VA, & GA). He helped discover and implement a single on-line solution that allowed the entire organization to track, manage, and deploy face-to-face interpreters from anywhere with an Internet connection. This permitted seamless communication among medical staff, the interpreter scheduling team members, and the company employed and agency interpreters. Mark also led a pilot program and coordinated the implementation for a video remote interpreter service (VRI) for the company. This allows non-English speaking patients at Novant Health to have an interpreter in 20 languages, including ASL (American Sign Language), virtually present at their bedside within 30 seconds or less.

Today, Mark continues his career with Novant Health as a multimedia specialist in a new corporate service line called patient services. Mark is tasked with producing high-quality digital media for patient education purposes. He is also implementing a new distribution system for it. Branded as “Novant Health TV”, this new platform will allow the organization to better showcase its promise of providing remarkable healthcare to the patients in the communities Novant Health serves.
