Matt Kynes was born in the UK and raised in the US near Washington, DC. He completed college at the University of Florida and medical school at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN after a one-year internship with an inner-city community development non-profit called Desire Street Ministries based out of New Orleans, LA. During medical school, his global health-oriented activities included spending 2 months in South Sudan conducting community surveys on attitudes toward HIV/AIDS, living and working in a home for disadvantaged children, and assisting at a local hospital. During anesthesia residency, he has maintained connections in global health by developing a network of anesthesia residents, fellows, and faculty to meeting periodically to discuss topics in global health and surgery/anesthesia and is currently developing a curriculum for anesthesia residents planning on overseas work.
Currently, Matt is completing a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital in Nashville TN, where he will continue as faculty in August, 2016
