PAT MASTORS, CEO OF PEAR HEALTH LLC, IS AUTHOR OF DESIGN TO SURVIVE: 9 WAYS AN IKEA APPROACH CAN FIX HEALTH CARE & SAVE LIVES. THE BOOK IS “…A PASSIONATE PLEA FOR SIMPLICITY AND COMMON SENSE”, URGING SOLUTIONS THAT REDUCE COSTS, STREAMLINE EFFICIENCIES AND PARTNER WITH THE CUSTOMER IN THE DESIGN AND DELIVERY OF HEALTH CARE.
A veteran news and medical reporter at several New England television stations, the loss of her father while in medical care in 2006 led Pat to seek solutions that patients and advocates can use themselves to support safety, dignity and participation. She is creator of the Patient Pod, a patient engagement & empowerment tool that brings patient autonomy and communication to the bedside.
Pat worked successfully to help pass two patient safety laws in Rhode Island, and advises on patient safety policy and engagement for federal, state, public and private health care organizations. She blogs at IslandsofExcellence.blogspot.com and her writing has appeared in several major medical publications.
In May 2013 Pat’s work came full circle when her daughter Jessica was diagnosed with a rare and paralyzing nerve disorder, Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Jessica’s length of stay in the hospital was less than one third the average (according to published studies) for her diagnosis and treatment, and her rate of recovery has been exceptional…which the family attributes at least in part to an empowered and engaged partnership with care providers.
